Tracheostomy UK - Terms of Reference


1. Membership

The reporting committee is comprised of a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. Committee elections are held annually and all members are invited to vote for their chosen candidates.

Posts are held for an initial 2 year period with an option to extend for additional 1 year periods.

2. What comprises a quorum?
A meeting will take place if those present consider enough people are present to do business and at least one of the committee officers (Chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer or secretary) are present.

3. Attendance of meetings
The meetings should be attended by either the chair or vice chairman. Minutes should be recorded and posted on the website.

Any member is permitted to attend the meetings with prior arrangement to allow for adequate meeting space.

Non-members can only be invited on the invitation of the Chairman and/or Vice Chairman.

4. Frequency of meetings
Meetings are to held three times a year.

Additional meetings may be held as follow up from the regular meetings in response to group activities.

5. Authority
Tracheostomy UK aims to identify professional issues associated with the care of patients requiring a tracheostomy. The group will make recommendations for best practice in tracheostomy nursing care and in training and educational requirements.

6. Duties and responsibilities

  • To provide a forum for clinical practitioners to discuss and troubleshoot clinical issues related to nursing care of patients who require a tracheostomy.

  • To provide a network for nurses involved in the delivery of care and/or education in tracheostomy management.

  • To ensure tracheostomy skills training and education is effective in improving the patients experience of care.

  • To address the clinical demands and educational.

  • To encourage nursing research focusing on nursing care or training in relation to tracheostomy patients.

  • To promote the well being of patients who require a tracheostomy.

  • To consult and contribute to National tracheostomy guidelines and skills competencies.

  • To provide an annual educational meeting or conference addressing current dilemmas for this specific patient group.
