What is Required at Home?

The care of a tracheostomy requires a large range of equipment and specialised disposable supplies to meet the individual’s clinical needs. The items will be essential in maintaining the function of the tracheostomy and wellbeing of the individual. The items will vary between individuals depending on their particular needs.

The clinician will assess the individual’s clinical requirements and choose the most appropriate items from the selection of manufacturers available. The items can be summarised into the following non-disposable equipment and disposable supplies categories:

Equipment

Disposable Supplies

Mains suction unit

Portable suction unit

Portable Nebulizer

Cuff Pressure Manometer
(if tube is cuffed)

Spare Tracheostomy Tubes (current size)

Spare Tracheostomy Tube (smaller size*)

Spare inner cannulas

Velcro Holder or Ribbon Tapes

Pre-cut keyhole dressings

Inner cannula cleaning brushes

Heat Moisture Exchangers (HME)

Buchanan Bibs

Speaking Valves

Suction Tubing

Suction catheters

Nebulizer reservoir and tubing

Tracheostomy Mask

10ml syringe (if tube cuffed)

Lubricating Jelly (individual tubes/sachets)

Service contracts for equipment will be required for maintenance checks and in the event of equipment failure. Arrangements for disposing of and collecting of clinical waste need to be arranged when the individual goes home.
